Volkswagon's hot GTI hatch returns for the 2008 model year - and the tuner influence deepens as VW drops the ride height about two-thirds of an inch on the two-door and four-door models and adds new trim packages .
The GTI's 2.0 liter, 200-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine works through either a standard six-speed manual transmission or a Direct Shift six-speed gearbox, a type of manual where the driver controls gear changes but the clutchwork is handled automatically.
All GTIs come equipped with 17-inch wheels and performance tires, high-capacity brakes, sport suspension, metal-trim- med pedals, and monochromatic exterior paint schemes - in addition to air conditioning, cruise control, and a rear defroster. The standard safety equipment package includes anti-whiplash head restraints, a tire pressure monitoring system, front-side and curtain airbags, as well as electronic stability control.
Other changes for 2008 include standard Sirius satellite radio, the deletion of automatic climate control, and new trim level names: GTI and GTI Autobahn.
The GTI has strong performance, handling and braking, along with a well-designed cabin. But the GTI has some confusing and outdated entertainment features, and VW purists are indecisive over the hatch's more modern appearance.
Small but strong, the 2008 VW GTI is well-liked for its sporty performance, comfortable seating and versatile hatchback design. Add in its great fuel economy, long list of safety features and attractive pricing and the GTI is hard to pass up compared to its less powerful, less flexible but more expensive counterparts. The 2008 GTI has numerous trim packages, interior trim and exterior trim. Though there were few design or feature changes for 2008. Aftermarket trim is available for those that want to inhance their gti even further.
The 2008 four-door GTI receives competitive scores for government crash tests, and reviewers have a generally high opinion of the amount and performance of standard safety equipment offered with the hatchback. Check out our full Safety Review for details on safety tests and features.
